Danny Smith from the Council Bluffs Airport spoke at the Optimist Club on January 29. He began working at the airport in 1992 and became manager in 1996.
The first airport in Council Bluffs was established in 1927 in the area of South 11th street. In 1929 it was moved to the area where Sam’s Club is now. It had four runways, for use when the wind was blowing different directions. In was moved to the current location in 1967 because I-29 was built through the previous site. It was one of the first airports on the US Mail Service.
Since 1990 many improvements have been made to the airport. They paved the road to the airport, added more hangers, and are adding a second runway.
The CB airport is a full service airport. They can provide charter aircraft at $800/hour. They also have nine rental aircraft. They have a new fuel transport and do airplane maintenance. They perform a variety of Federal testing The airport also has a new classroom for Iowa Western Aviation Maintenance training.
The airport has a museum that has free admittance. It is open Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings.
The CB airport services three LifeNet helicopters. It is home for 96 aircraft, including 67 single prop, 11 twin prop, 5 jets, and 13 helicopters. They average 106 takeoffs and landings per day.
The most common destination for people fling into the CB airport is Nebraska Furniture Mart. The second most common focus is horse trading.
